Rob Lanterman is a writer, musician, and record label owner from Boise, ID. He enjoys writing about how aspects of punk rock and DIY have informed all areas of his life, as well as his own experience touring, writing, recording, and being a label owner.
Let’s kick things off with a banger! Bernard Herrmann is a film scoring legend. Psycho, Vertigo, Citizen Kane, you name it, he’s probably written it. One of his earliest films, The Day the Earth Stood Still, directed by Robert Wise, was also the first time Herrmann made use of the theremin. And, in fact, Herrmann used two theremin soloists in the score!
“Musica Ricercata” is a work consisting of 11 movements for solo piano, which make use of two notes in the first movement, three in the second, four in the third and so on, featuring the full chromatic scale in the last movement of the work. We will look at the first movement for its unusual and brave choice of using a single note for an entire composition (or as we’ll see, for all but the last four measures).

Soundfly started scraping our own free course, Crowdfunding for Musicians, of as many mentions of PledgeMusic as possible. We were beginning to think the incredibly hopeful era of crowdfunding and its implied economic utopia — fans funding artists directly and becoming stakeholders in their success — was coming to an end. But then we heard the good news.
So you want to show off your brand new song to a record label or potential manager, or to book a string of upcoming gigs, or even your friends and family, but there isn’t a producer in sight who could do it on short notice and for less than a few grand. Well, the good thing is that this situation is exactly what Logic Pro is made for.

“Thank U, Next”: The sustain of that dreamy electric piano in this chord loop solidifies the G♭ chord as a G♭M13 and the F chord is an F7(#9) secondary dominant (V/vi )! Then we have a regular B♭m before returning to the tonic — but not so fast! We haven’t really returned home, since it’s a D♭7, another secondary dominant (V/IV) that sends us back to G♭M13. These secondary dominants act like coal nuggets to fuel a perpetual motion chord-loop machine. Form-wise, you could also call the chorus extensions “post-choruses,” but I already used up my “P” for the pre-chorus sections, so I’ll just call these extensions “variations” and be done with it.

Before you get rid of something you should at least take the time to figure it out. If you still don’t like it you can put it back on the chopping block. But getting rid of something just because you didn’t give it a chance isn’t exactly fair. Learn it or lose it!
Either way, mobile streaming seems to have stolen all of our beloved video stars with irrefutable might. But today, as we welcome back one of the strangest global holidays, World Television Day, let’s reflect on the irrefutably mighty influence that television has had on the development of music in the 20th and 21st centuries.
From where I’m sitting, some other “holy grails” include the Moog Sub Phatty (bass synth perfection), the Oberheim Matrix 6 (the best pad presets), and the Roland Jazz Chorus amplifier (the best clean tone in the game), just to name a few. But the Roland RE-201 might even top that list. Its tone, ease-of-use, and design are unparalleled when it comes to echo/delay effects and it continues to be an inspiration to effects producers to this day.
You’ll learn how to dissect the specific elements that make hip-hop unique as a genre, and master them in your own music. Another of the many great perks of joining this course is that we’ve partnered with our friends at Splice to give all students two months of free access to their library of samples, so you can get started sampling and making hip-hop beats immediately!
